HIPEC

Understanding

HIPEC

HIPEC stands for Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy. HIPEC is a combination of surgery and chemotherapy and is designed to target cancer cells within the abdominal cavity.

It is a specialized cancer treatment that is used primarily for certain types of advanced abdominal cancers, particularly those that have spread to the peritoneal cavity, which is the area inside the abdomen that contains organs such as the stomach, liver, and intestines.

how HIPEC typically works:

Procedure

HIPEC is a meticulous procedure that requires a highly skilled surgical team. The process can be divided into several key steps.

Surgery

The patient undergoes an initial surgical procedure to remove as much visible tumor tissue as possible. This is a critical step as HIPEC works most effectively when there is minimal tumor burden remaining.

Chemotherapy Solution

A heated chemotherapy solution, typically containing drugs like cisplatin or mitomycin C, is prepared. This solution is heated to a precise temperature, usually around 41-43°C (105-109°F).

Perfusion

The heated chemotherapy solution is then introduced into the peritoneal cavity. The Chemotherapy fluid is continually circulated in the abdomen for about 1 to 2 hours.

Removal

After the desired exposure time, the solution is drained from the abdomen, and the incision is closed. The patient is carefully monitored during the recovery period.

Why preferable ?

Benefits of HIPEC

HIPEC offers several advantages over traditional chemotherapy and surgery.

Targeted Treatment

HIPEC delivers chemotherapy directly to the affected area, minimizing systemic exposure and side effects.

Enhanced Efficacy

The combination of heat and chemotherapy enhances the drugs’ effectiveness, increasing the chances of eradicating residual cancer cells.

Reduced Toxicity

Lower systemic drug doses result in reduced toxicity compared to traditional chemotherapy.

Improved Quality of Life

With fewer side effects, patients often experience a better quality of life during and after treatment.
